I recently helped to start, and joined the board of, Next Generation Nepal (NGN). This is an innovative non-profit dedicated to giving a future to trafficked children from conflict zones in Nepal. We are developing a comprehensive plan to provide a brighter future for children trafficked from conflict zones in Nepal. This action plan is flexible enough to adapt to the often rapidly-changing environment on the ground in war-torn Nepal. Our three-phased approach is a direct response to the real needs of the children and to the current crisis facing the country. The three phases include Immediate Care, Reunification, and Sustainability and Expansion.

The Association of the Bar of the City of New York, is the largest and most influential city bar in the country. As a member of the City Bar Association, I have been honored to serve on the International Security Affairs Committee and as an at-large member of the Council of International Affair. I was able to draft two official reports since 9/11, the first on the President's authority to invade Iraq and the second on the trial of Saddam Hussein. Council Chair James Silkenat and I are republishing these reports and many others produced by the bar Association in a book The Imperial Presidency and the Consequences of 9/11: Lawyers React to the Global War on Terrorism (Greenwood Press, 2007). Since 2006, I have served as Chair of the Committee on International Human Rights and have been promoting respect for human rights and the rule of law through letter campaigns, public lectures, and private meetings.

The EastWest Institute is a "think and do tank" based in New York, with offices in Brussels, Moscow and Prague and satellites around Europe. Its board members range from former presidents and prime ministers to successful representatives of the private sector. In this photograph, I'm caught on Red Square mugging it up with board members Stephen Heinz, President of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and Donald Kendall, former CEO of PepsiCo. As you can see from the poster, Mr. Kendall is a celebrity in Russia because he was the first western businessperson to bring consumer non-durables to the Soviet Union. While at the EastWest Institute, I created the Worldwide Security Program, an innovative initiative working to meet the challenges of terrorism by bridging divides between civil society, business and the public sector from Europe, North America and the Middle East. The program continues to thrive today.

Debevoise & Plimpton, LLP is a seventy-five year old corporate law firm based in New York with offices in Washington, London, Paris, Moscow, Hong Kong and Shanghai. While as associate at Debevoise, I worked primarily in the fields of private equity funds and insurance. In this work, I set up and maintined funds for some of the most successful LBO firms. I also worked on a variety of mergers and acquisitions, including the historic American Airlines acquisition of TWA. While at Debevoise, I had the opportunity to work with world-class lawyers such as Michael Harrell (funds), Dick Dunham (insurance), Meredith Brown (M&A) and Stephen Friedman.

The Asian University for Women is an initiative to establish a world-class college in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Supporters include the Bill and Melinda Gates and Soros Open Society Institute foundations. Over the past several years, I have served variously as Secretary, Treasurer, and member of the board of directors along with a terrific group of people including Stephen Friedman, Kamal Ahmad and the late Alice Stone Ilchman, each of whom became a treasured friend.
